According to BBC reports, half of all street crime in London and about 40% in the West Midlands involves the theft of a mobile phone.
A quarter of mobile phone thefts happen when people are using the phone in public or they have the phone in view. 90% of robberies are carried out by males, usually in groups, and thefts can involve violence or the threat of it.
An estimated 1.3 million phones were stolen in the UK in 2003! However, mobile phone theft is not the only problem experienced by owners of mobile phones: the smaller and lighter phones get, the easier it appears to be to lose them!
Water damage is another common problem.
Yet some very low cost mobile phone insurances do not cover for loss or water damage. This has resulted in some people fraudulently stating that their phone was stolen in order to claim on their insurance - in a recent police survey for example, 13% of people who had claimed admitted during an amnesty, that their claims had been bogus.
So a key feature of any mobile phone insurance is cover for both loss and water damage, as well as theft.
Most mobile phones are pretty robust, but they weren't designed to be dropped on pavements, roads, or the floor, and many do not survive this "test"! After the physical shock to the phone comes the shock to the wallet, when you find out that the mobile phone - which came "free" or at quite low cost - was heavily subsidised by the network operator, and a replacement is going to cost you a lot of cash. Unless of course, you have taken out insurance!
