Luminaire

The lighting fixture in its entirety is the luminaire. As such it comprises the light source (or lamp) itself, a reflector to help direct the light, and the necessary housing and an aperture, which may contains a lens. The housing can be for protection and for mounting to a wall or ceiling. Naturally, there is provision for connection to a power source, and there may be an electrical ballast.

Given that one of the functions of the luminaire is to act as a reflector for the light source, it then becomes apparent that it is importnat to have technical understanding and experience of how changes in the luminaire can enhance overall lighting provision.

An effective luminaire can mean more light from a given lamp, or make it possible to reduce energy for a constant level of light.
