Getting started:
your package includes your pay as you go SIM card, a
user guide, and your PIN and PUK codes - don't worry if these
terms are new to you, they are explained later! But do make sure
to put a note of your PIN & PUK codes somewhere safe.
Your pay as you go SIM card comes loaded with
€25 of call credit, and you can buy top up vouchers from us or
any outlet displaying the United Mobile logo (below, right) -
but easiest of all is to top up online
from anywhere in the world.
Inserting the
SIM: first of all, read your phone's handbook
carefully! Apart from other useful things, it will tell you how to
insert the SIM. Gently pop the SIM card out of its retaining,
larger card. Avoid touching the wiring with your fingers, and
carefully insert the SIM into your phone's SIM slot. There is only
1 way to insert the card.
Make sure the phone is charged. Switch the
phone on. Enter the PIN code that is supplied in your package. As
soon as you see the phone display the network operator's name or
logo - which will take some seconds - you are ready to start
making or receiving calls.
If you enter the PIN incorrectly 3 times, the
SIM will lock and you will not be able to use your SIM until you
enter the PUK code - so you can see why it is important that you
keep this somewhere safe.
Making
calls: always dial using the complete
international code. We strongly recommend saving numbers in your
phone book in the international format, so UK phone numbers become
"+44" (and drop the leading "0"). Also, if you have to dial a
number with fewer than 10 digits, add one (or more) "0" to the end
of the number so that you are dialling at least 10 digits. Enjoy
making international phone calls while travelling abroad in the
knowledge that you are saving up to 75% on roaming costs!
The exception to using the international format
is when you make a call to emergency services, (where you use
the number of the country you are in - many countries use 911 or 912 - ) and any Easycodes, which you just
dial.
When you place a call, you will be briefly
disconnected (and your phone will display "call ended" followed by
"waiting for SCB"). The phone will then ring, which you should
answer normally by pushing the green "Dial" button (or "Send" on
some phones). A few seconds later, you will hear the phone ringing
at the number you called.
Receiving a call:
this is exactly the same as with your current or previous phone -
just push the green button when the phone rings.
Voice mail: just dial
Easycode 077 and follow the instructions to set up your voice mail
and personalise your own greeting. You can also dial 077 from any
country to access your voice mail box.
Sending Text
messages (SMS): This should be setup on your United
Mobile SIM for you. However, in case you need to reset this,
follow these instructions.
You must first of all set up your phone to use
our SMS Centre number. Check your phone's handbook for exact
details, but they will be along the following lines: choose the
"Messages" option on your menu, and then go to "Message set up".
Select "SMS" and then choose "options". Follow this by choosing
"change settings", and "service centre" where you enter +42379010599, followed by "OK".
You can now send SMS from your phone in the
usual way, as long as you have sufficient credit left. If you do
not have credit, you will get a message saying "message not sent".
You can receive SMS with most operators.
If your SIM is stolen:
call the United Mobile hotline immediately on +411 311 3115 so your phone and account can
be barred. As a worst case scenario, the thief can only use up
remaining credit.
